Nipigon Bay, Lake Superior

Post by NickScheuer »

We've recently returned from a week cruising Nipigon Bay, launching our A-25 at Nipigon.

We towed the Du NORD from Rockford, IL and found the roads excellent, except for a few miles between Little Marais and Grand Marais, MN. We were surprised to find launching and parking were free at the Nipigon Marina.

We met two different people who knew of the Albin-25 Motor Sailer berthed at Thunder Bay. One of those fellows gave us tips about anchorages along the south side of St Ignace Island, emphasizing that CPR Slip should be a must. CPR Slip is an old fish camp built a century ago by the Canadian Pacific Railroad for special guests. It is now maintained (and added to) by a group of volunteers in Thunder Bay.

The area was almost deserted during the last week of August. Except for CPR Slip, we had all of our anchorages to ourselves. Lake Superior was benign all week.

This was our first real cruise in the Albin-25 we bought in the Fall of 2011. The boat performed flawlessly. The pic shows one of the typical Motor Cruisers which outnumbered the conventional cruising boats we encountered. They are old steel fishing boats in which the accomodations have been extended aft over the deck space formerly used for hauling nets. Typical power is by something like a 6-cyl Cummins Diesel.
