First Montauk Fluke 2015

Post by FiveToes »

The Five Toes made her first trip to Montauk yesterday in search of some flatties. Great day on the water and the boys had a blast. Fish from 19" to 24". Cannot wait to get back out next weekend.

And great smiles too. Yes good eating no doubt. Way to get the lighthouse in the picture. The conditions look like they were horrible!

Out of curiosity, how do you guys fish for Fluke?

We have very similar fish here called Brill that we generally catch while drift fishing on sandbanks. What sort of end tackle do you use, any glittery attracters or spoons etc?

tree our fluke are actually a flounder. we drift bouncing bottom with buck tails , rubber squids w/spinners, other attracters. all tipped with a bait such as squid, minnows, or strip baits. smoother sandy bottoms alongside structure work for me.

cheers!!

yes as special k said. important to keep the drift slow too, like +/- 0.5knt, slow enough to keep the baits on the bottoms and not spiraling but you want to cover ground as well. When snapper (baby blues) are around we catch them, keep them alive and drift them at the bottom too and they can produce you a doormat. The short fluke are great bait for stripe bass, but they are illegal so we NEVER do that. IMO it's the best fishing around here for taking the kids out.

Here's my girls back in 2008, first season fluke fishing aboard T-R, then ages 6 & 8

And here's Grace (the one above in the red jacket) last season at the ripe teenage age of 14, she who was once proud to hold up her catch is now " eeeewww, gross, come on Dad hurry, don't let him shake and get me all wet and fishy!!! "

Here's one of our Brill. As you can see very similar. Again on the drift but about 1 - 1.5 knots on sand banks. We use strips of mackerel or launce that we catch on the same grounds.

Also some of what we are really there for - the turbot!

Attached is my monster fluke caught in 50 feet of water off of FI Inlet. Took me hours to haul this bad boy in. Thank the fish gods for shows like Wicked Tuna, I never would have done it.
