Skeg modification to reduce cavitation on ET36

Post by Almeister »

Good day,

I am posting skeg modification pictures for every ET36 single engine owner's benefit that have experienced vibration problems at speed higher than 8 kts. Fellow AOG members such as Engineer6 and 902dlw have helped me figure out the source of an engine mount bracket stress fracture and its probable fix. With the help of Engineer6 sketches I was able to have modifications done on Atmosphère's skeg. We added two triangular structure in order to help the water flow to the propeller thence reducing the cavitation effect.

I hope this will help. I will keep you posted. We are sailing down to NYC via the St-Lawrence river, Richelieu river, Lake Champlain and Hudson river in July. I should have a much better idea when I come back from that trip.

Rgds

Al.

Hi Al,
Very nicely executed. Looks better than the one I had done. I particularly like the extension of coverage back onto the keel. Mine was not nearly so smooth. Sorry I did not get pictures of mine but you "got it" as they say.

Thanks engineer6, the fiberglass guy at the boat yard is pretty good. I'll pass along the good comments.

I'll keep you posted after a few running tests.

I did the same mod years ago on my 34 Mainship. I gained 250 rpm at wot just from this mod.

Excellent Jleonard!
So far so good. I ran Atmosphere at various RPM the past week and she seems to behave with more fluidity. Looking good! Tks for your comments.

Awesome. The only exception is I made a "bullet nose" rather than a "point" but the effects should be the same.
