Adding lights to mast

Post by rebuckley »

Hi -
I have the original mast still in place, and I was looking to add a "spreader assembly" so that I could put up some lights to light the aft while on anchor. I have been clicking around the sailing websites trying to "get the lingo" - has anyone added something like this?
I assume I could build one cheaper than buy one - the diameter is around 4" - I was thinking it is as simple as putting some wood up there, cut to fit the mast, add some "spreaders" and painting it white. Since it will hold very little weight, and have no true pressure on it, I am not too concerned. Just wondering if there were any other methods out there?
Thanks -
Reb

Hi Reb,
Sorry I'm not here with a great solution, just happy that you asked the question. I want to do the same thing on our '90 36' Classic to mount some lights on. I'm thinking that some good quality wood (teak or ?) fitted to the masts' shape and perhaps a SS "L" bracket to attach it might do the job. Hopefully, someone out there has a brilliant solution !

How about using aluminum channel stock?

I just posted my current yardarm project over in General Discussion. It may give you some ideas.
