Bed in aft cabin - Albin 43 1980

Post by Mikecambrai »

We have just bought an Albin 43 for our retirement cruising. The safe walk-around decks and door adjacent to the helm made for an easy choice for budding geriatrics.
The bed in the aft cabin has the mattress fitted under the alcove of the aft deck. This means that our pillows are under this deck and if we were to sleep this way no doubt our heads would bump when we got up. To solve this problem we pulled out the mattress about a foot such that the pillows are now within the cabin as are our heads. In the morning, we push the mattress back to give more room in the cabin.
Is there another way of dealing with this? The mattress is a hefty sprung one and is quite thick, so was the original mattress much thinner?

Our 40 is the same way and we also put our feet under that end. At first that got us a little bit "disoriented" but after a bit it's fine and we have NO lumps on our heads.

We have the same on our 40 but sleep with our heads under the alcove. It took a bit to get used to but it doesn't seem to cause any problems. We like having the side tables and reading lights by our heads.

Thanks for your advice. We will try out all the positions that you have mentioned! Because we read in bed, having our heads below the windows would be better for us as we can lean against the window surround.

Head under deck....just learn to swing out versus sit up first.

Works for me.
