A25 displacement hull to semi displacement year?

Post by FrankD »

I’m looking for an A25 displacement hull in the NE and wondering what year or hull number the change was made?
Thanks

Is there a particular reason why you are looking for the displacement version? The differences are pretty minor

There used to be a post pinned here identifying the difference and years made. Can't find it now though...

I believe that the last year of the displacement hull was 1972. The semi-displacement hull began in 1973. Of course, there is always the possibility of some crossing over during the transition years.

The dead give-away is the shape of the transom and aft portion of the hull bottom. That, and the fact the semi-displacement hulls were known as "DeLuxe" and had chrome "DeLuxe" emblems on either side of the cabin, forward of the side windows.

Thanks guys
I’m hoping for a full displacement hull because being a sailor, going 6.5 knots in a straight line is smokin! It will take less power to do that, be more economical and if a repower is needed, I really like the Beta 20 for multiple reasons. The 20 is lots for the displacement hull.
Thanks for your input and info

I'd like to see the theoretical and experimental data which gets to the differences in power necessary for the displacement and semi-displacement hulls. My gut (which is often ill informed) tells me the differences are minimal. We're sailors too, but sail an F-24 so either version is damn slow. :)

You do get better bow cabin cabinetry in the semi-displacement version in my opinion.

I understand hull differences would be minimal really....
The earlier ones would be a bit “slipperier” and take lass power to get hull speed. In the end, it will be overall condition and price.
An F24 to a trawler is like a Ferrari to a woody station wagon...
But I get it 😄😄
I still sail too, but wayyyyy slower boats 😴

Here is the essential difference between hulls:

Early displacement version (mine)

And later DeLuxe version, in this case a 1977 that we almost bought but didn't for other reasons not connected to hull shape.

I will say, having been treated to a (totally awesome) ride earlier this season on Sunsetrider's 1976 A25 with 36HP MD17C Volvo in Ontario, compared to our 24 HP Yanmar there's a marked difference in speed, and for whatever reason, noise level between the two. If it were possible to directly post video files here without first posting on YouTube & supplying a link, I could show you the difference between cruising at 6.5 knots and 8+ knots. But suffice to say the semi displacement kicks up a much bigger wake/stern wave than the early models like mine. Fuel consumption wise it's not that much different, maybe 2 or 3 tenths of a gallon per hour more with the DeLuxe version.

PS, actually a bit off topic, but we swung through Ottowa on our way from Sharbot Lake/Kingston over to Quebec & on into Maine with our RV on September 3rd. Rainy day that day, but we wanted to see Canada's capitol.

Ottawa....home to politicians. Pembroke is upstream on the Ottawa River so we take solice in the fact our you know what goes downstream 😄
It’s actually not a bad city. Home prices are still reasonable and although more crime than 30yrs ago....still pretty safe.

Pretty close to the Petawawa River if my geography memory serves me correct. Paddled it in 1978.

Yeah, baby! Love that MD17C! (And the Narrows.)
