A25 - mysterious object in engine compartment

Quick help needed here. Since previous owners pulled out the engine from my Albin 25, I noticed a water leak from one place in engine department. It looks like some kind of a sink, but where does it lead?
I removed that cap which was just a sealing mass, and it seems underneath is some kind of drain. There was some small amount of water and large amount of dirt.
It turns out that water coming from there is caused by some heavy rain we had these days, but I hope someone will tell me the purpose of that little sink.

By "sink" are you referring to the smooth (molded fiberglass with gelcoat surface) catch basin under the length of the engine and transmission? It's mighty handy for catching fasteners and other small items you accidently drop when working in that area. It's also handy for catching the five quarts of crankcase oil if you neglect to suck that oil out of the engine before removing the transmission of a Volvo-Penta Diesel.

Hey NickSheuer, thanks for helping me out. I was thinking only on that circular area, which has small hole which leads somewhere. My first thought was that it's a drain, so if there is some water or oil leakage in engine area, it can suck all of that and take it to the section where bilge pump is - under the propeller shaft, but it doesn't work like that and I'm not able to access the inside of it. I assume it's clogged..

On my boat this opening is sealed with a fibreglass filler as shown here

It has a factory look to it and I suspect it's purpose was to make sure the engine pan was well bedded after installation prior to filling and sealing.

Maybe...But the fact that it's sealed is also useful to me. I left it open for a couple of days just to see if there will be some water dripping again, but it's dry so far. I will consider sealing it again with some proper sealant. Thanks
