Albin 27FC Stern Rail Fastener Question

Post by davgav »

Has anyone removed the stern rails on a 27FC? I'd like to re-bed my rails and I was wondering if it is necessary to remove the headliner in the aft cabin. Are the rails fastened with nuts or are they threaded into glassed-in backing plates?

I removed and re-bedded my stern rail last year. This was probably done before on my boat, because there were patched cuts in the headliner, and aluminum bars on the underside to spread the load of the thru bolts. I routed out the holes, re-filled with epoxy and re-drilled to make sure the core could not be further damaged.

My headliner is still in good shape. If you can, recommend feeling for the bolts and making smart cuts in the headliner.

For reference, look at posting for “remove hand rail and paint. Offers advise about headliner.

On my 85 FC the nuts/aluminum backing plates were glassed over in the original construction. I have removed all the original headliner. You should be able to remove the bolts without accessing the nuts, though you may find a bolt possibly slipping as some of the glasswork could be patchy.
