Albineers' favourite tipple?

Post by DCatSea »

As the warmer weather comes in (at least here on the Chesapeake Bay/Potomac) my thoughts turn to beverages - A and NA. I've just purchased a nice "Gin Pennant", so this seemed like a good time to ask Albineers about their favorite A and NA tipple in the Summer, or indeed Year round.

Being a Janner (Devon UK), I'll kick it off with Hard Cider, known to generations as "Scrumpy", as a daily hot weather quencher, and growing in popularity in the DelMaVa. Pusser's Rum in any combination (except with Coke) is a close second to Gin and Tonic (Preferably Plymouth Gin, but Bombay Extra Dry is very acceptable). I'm always up for a beer, of pretty much any type, but aren't that fond of IPAs; a good pint of Best Bitter goes down a treat.

Cider or rum for me. Although I do enjoy disaronno on the rocks or with fresh squeezed oranges. As for cider. Mostly dry with a touch of sweet, and must be carbonated, not a fan of still. Rum...dark and spiced. I don't drink clear rum. However I do mix rum with coke (never Pepsi).

Doug, a man after my own heart! The Bombay distillery is about 20 miles from me and I am partial to the Sapphire. Otherwise it's a real ale for me.

I used to be a big CAMRA supporter, even had a corduroy jacket with elbow protectors.
Big believer in West Country beers like Rock (Sharps), Proper Job (St Austell) and Otter Ale (Otter Brewery). Pompey used to have decent beer (in the 70s), and I assume still does. Recommend Plymouth Navy Strength gin.

I have a bottle of Plymouth sloe gin in the cupboard. Gone are the days of gales ales of horndean that you would have been used to. It's still there but now made by fullers of London. You may have been custom to a pint of brickwoods! Bloody awful pint from what I've been told.

With regards to sharps beers, they make doombar which is a wonderful pint that is hugely popular throughout ale drinkers in the U.K. Now.

Since I bought the Pusser's rum "splice the mainbrace" pennant set, painkillers do the trick for me. Hendricks and tonic for the admiral.

Our vessel's signature drink is evolving still, Mount Gay Eclipse rum over pineapple slices with some juice or syrup and ice. The recipe is a work in progress and I want something that can be mixed from canned ingredients in small proportions with little waste and no refrigeration requirements other than the ice. Open to any suggestions!

On a good night, as an ex Faslane and as DCatSea will understand, Pussers Blue, mixed with a Pussers Blue will hit the spot, washed down with a pint from the local independent brewery.

FIREBALL! Nothing better than sipping some fireball on the rocks anchored under the stars! After spending 7 months in Australia over the past two years, we have also learned to love a good bottle of Australian red wine, preferably a Shiraz. However, being on the Chesapeake with DCatSea, we also have to agree that rum or gin drinks would be great on a nice summer afternoon. Oh and yes, agree that beer is always great (not IPA either)!

As with anything it depends on what you start with.

For us, being water people we like rum and after much experimentation have settled on Kraken. It is so smooth you will sip a shot to make it last longer.

Now most might say if you are mixing a liquor with something it doesn't make any difference what the liquor is, some even feel the cheaper the liquor the better.

Try Kraken, mixed with anything, and the mixture will be enhanced by the Kraken.

We like Kraken, cranberry and pineapple, over ice.
Calm seas,

Charles

Ah HA! Just discovered Pusser's Gunpowder Proof rum at https://www.reservebar.com/pussers-rum-gunpowder-proof. A bit more like the RN version, at 109 Proof, , and they have pretty much got the story right, except that the rum locker was above the magazine on a ship-of-the-line, and Their Lordships, in their wisdom, didn't want the rum contaminating the powder if a cask burst open unless it would "go off" with an appropriate bang at the right time. Hence the high proof of this beauty.
Not available in Virginia, but, lo and behold, by driving over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which I do anyway every time I go to see "Mazboot", I can pick it up in better "Offies" (look it up - Brit Albineers know of what I speak) at any time.
Go Navy!!!
