Wood in construction. What years?

Post by Jkraft »

Hi all! This is my first official question. I am beginning my search for a 28TE. I know they stopped using wood in construction around 2000. Did the 2000 boats use wood coring?

My 2002 - 28TE / hull laid June of 2001 had a balsa cored hull below the waterline. Found this out when I shifted the location of the transducer for the sounder. The cutout plug was dry. Over drilled the hole from inside leaving the exterior fiberglass skin intact and filled with fiberglass and filler. Once setup, then drilled to size of new transducer and all balsa core was sealed. If done properly, balsa cores will not get wet. A good surveyor will sound the hull, possibly have a moisture meter and you will know if she's wet or if she's dry. I discovered the old transducer hole had been done the same way.

FYI - Albin always laid solid glass in the locations where their thru-hulls, drains, etc. from the factory would be installed.
