Yanmar 6LPA-STP belt tension

Post by recppd »

I changed the two belts on my 2004 Yanmar 6LPA-STP as they were throwing dust all over the engine compartment from being too loose this season. I noticed when I tightened everything down that the inner belt was slightly tighter than the outer belt. Is this normal? Or should they both be equal?

It's normal if you didn't order a matched set. Can be a PITA for sure

They were matched Rob. So either the alternator pulley is slightly canted, or the belts are very slightly different in size...

Try swapping the belts around then, maybe they'll be tensioned a little better. It would not surprise me if the alt was a tiny bit out of perpendicular relative to the engine CL.

Well, the good news is you got the job done. Having an engine fly into a thousand pieces is your worse nightmare.
Several years ago a friend in Brookings, Oregon let that happen to his Yammer. Got him a 40,000. bill before the 28 Albin was back on the water.
I do it every 6 years. Seems like Yammer says 6 years or 1200 hours whichever occurs first.
