Got it, so others have turned the 2 forward grills around with no issues?

Ironically, back in 2013, my surveyor spent a week investigating this topic, he also thought it was wrong. Not sure who he spoke to (boat was in Connecticut), but he reported back the same comments as JackK above...purposely done from the factory. Either way, glad I caught the issue before it grew into a bigger headache.

Rear facing will be fine, the engine is a big vacuum cleaner and will suck in all of the air it needs, it's not about ram air, it's all about the total size (sq ft) of the ventilation openings. The vent on the side of the pilothouse and the ones in the cockpit under the gunnels are great, the one's hullside under the rubrails can be a problem, especially forward facing.

Found ugly corrosion today on hose fittings, on a bracket and on the shifter cable.
WTF, where is that coming from?
(Not from the forward facing vents, because this corrosion is recent.)

Ran the engine and found raw water drips and drops from the top of the 4” diameter rubber hose joining the elbow.
Tried to torque the hose clamps, but no cigar.
Took everything apart, got new clamps and a new 7” long hose.
Put it all together and no mo leaks. (Maybe there is a God.. :shock: )
Hopefully it will last another 5-6 years.

The above took about 3 hours and I had to get a neighbor strongman to help me wrestle the old hose off the Fiberglass tube below the elbow.
Moral of the story: Open the hatch or engine box every time you run to make sure there is no leaks, drips, smoke or whatever.
(I do it frequently, but not every time, until now.. :roll: )

I noticed similar corrosion with my Cummins, ended up being that the stainless elbow gave up the ghost. Was able to replace it with a good running take out locally for $400 vs. 2,200 new part (!)

Stainless Elbow? Factory or aftermarket?
Seems the Yanmars have cast iron elbows, I ordered a SS riser, hoping it will last longer.

Yes, stainless elbow which was factory from all appearances (as was the replacement). It is incredible to see how the inside of the old one was pock marked like the surface of the moon. It eventually started dripping from the outside and then also had pinhole leaks that were probably introducing salt into my turbo. I did speak to two guys who seemed really reputable on custom fab exhaust if anyone is interested in their contact info, I didn't end up needing them because the part dropped into my lap fortunately.

How many hours/years on the SS elbow before if got pin holes?

New SS riser, new clamps, new heat shield, , new hose, silicon this time.
Hopefully no more leaks, but still smelling a faint odor of exhaust when I stick my nose close to the new components but possible from the external exhaust as the wind was blowing against the Port side. Will go for a ride tomorrow and power it up, hopefully no leaks, no nothing,.

Once you heat it up good, check your clamps again while still hot.

I may have to separate the dry and wet elbow again and introduce a new gasket, then try once more. Pinpointed the leak right there. Wish I could find torque values in the service manual for the clamps, but nothing. Trying to be firm and gentle at the same time.

No idea. It may be original to the boat from 1994. Hours about 1400.

Went downtown to pump the holding tank, exhaust leaked continuously, albeit small, smoke, no soot.
Took the system apart again, cleaned the mating surfaces between riser and wet elbow, then re-assembled with a fresh SS gasket, but no exhaust paste this time. ( it looked like a slight mis alignment and the paste did nothing except harden, hence my fault, not the paste.) :shock:
Now there is no leak, squeaky clean down there, not a whiff of smoke or exhaust.
