Yanmar 6LP-STE valve guide issue (again)

Post by badornato1 »

I am considering a cosmetically very nice Albin 28 TE for sale but concerned about the Yanmar. It is a 2000 Yanmar 6LP-STE 300 hp that looks less than loved with rusty motor mounts, some rusty fittings on the trans cooler and fuel filter and the owner says he knows nothing about upgrading the valve guides.
There is one posting here or on boatdiesel saying that Yanmars after Serial number 51440 have the new guides. This engine is S/N 51668.
But another post says that Yanmar paid in a settlement to have all 6lp engines from 1996 to 2002 upgraded.

How can I check if this has the new guides? How expensive to upgrade?

Get the S/N off the block and call Yanmar US

They were very helpful looking up my engine history and it's pretty funny.

. and the owner says he knows nothing about upgrading the valve guides
First and only owner?
If so he is ignorant, the valve guide issue was a big deal back then.
If second or third owner, he (she) may not know much about it.
As mentioned above, call Yanmar. If they can’t help, there is some kind of color code for the new valve guides, green instead of blue or something. Plenty info on this site or boatdiesel.com.
Post pictures of boat and motor.
