Hydraulic steering ram on 31TE

Post by furball »

What is the size of the hydraulic ram, in CC’s on the 31TE?
It is the original steering cylinder installed by Albin.
I can't find it with the original documentation.
Or the SeaStar model installed?
SeaStar HC series but I’m not sure of the number.

Thanks,

I'll be onboard on Tuesday and will check mine out.
My SeaStar manual is for a few various models, but all are noticeably different so I should still be able to identify it even if the decal is missing.

Thanks Kevin,
My magic number is 230cc’s cylinder capacity. Most of the cylinders in my manual appear to be less than 230cc. My electronics guy wants to install an EV-400 and I think the EV-200 is capable and less expensive. The driver appears to be ram volume.
Thanks for your help.

Like John's, my ram is Sea Star:
Model - BA 175 - 7TM
Part # - HC 5319

To find out Capacity I would call Sea Star.

Thanks,
Manual shows 224.5cc's
That answers my autopilot question.
Saves me some money 👍

Just pulled my manual out and it is also the largest capacity 7 inch inboard Sea Star cylinder available. After that things jump to 9 inch and 214.7 & 290.1 cc's.

Glad that you have the cylinder to meet your autopilot needs.

Well, as it turns out, I don't in fact have the same cylinder 😳. What a surprise, right?
I have a BA200-7TM
It's not even listed in my manual! I found some info on line but it seems to be a less popular model. It also shows the capacity as 310cc's which is 30cc's larger than Raymarine recommends for the EV200 autopilot and type 1 pump. Probably explains why it's about 8 turns lock to lock as well.

At Defender's spring sale bought the EV 200 for a 35CB as recommended by the raymarine salesmen. Works perfectly with the original 2005 vintage raymarine package. You will love it. It was so easy to setup I had to call raymarine to make sur I didn't miss something

I know there's a fairly big price jump for the pumps - wonder if it would be cost effective to change the cylinder?

That's what I decided to do Doug, change the cylinder. Spoke to seastar and it's the right size for the boat, same footprint, reduces my turns from 8-1/2 to 5-1/2 lock to lock and less work for the existing pump. Changing the autopilot and pump to match the cylinder would have been 3 times the price. I expect to be very happy with the new gear. My old Raymarine autopilot was nearly flawless. Hope the new setup proves as reliable.

I had issues with my raymarine autiopilot. Came down to the auto pilot motor had the ev 200 changed to the ev 400 problem solved.
The ram that is in the 31 is barely sized fore the ev 200. Add the size of the 31 single screw rudder undersized. go to the ev 400 no problems.
