Shaft Nuts on a 2001 28TE, 6LP-STE..?

Post by Norseman »

Looks like I may do a quick 2 hour haul-out next week to inspect the bottom and swap the wheel as well as adding a missing zinc.
Using the most expensive yard in Fort Lauderdale so I need to have my ducks in a row as far as tools, parts, pieces, etc: Anything beyond 2 hours could be costly and may even include a few days on the hard.
Need to borrow a prop-puller, anybody in SE Florida got one?

The yard, LMC, is giving me a $10 per foot deal, not too bad, but walking into the office today was scary: Concierge Service with pretty young girls escorting me to a table and taking drink orders, Mega Yachts galore at he docks and serious looking Account Executives interviewing me to learn my “needs”.
I thought for sure they would ask $1,000 for a quick haul, but $280 ain’t not too bad. (They could probably tell with one look that my last name was not Madoff or Buffett)

At any rate, I need to get the correct wrenches (or spanners as we say in the old country). What size is the prop shaft nuts..?

On mine there was a thick nut and a thin locking nut we put back on. We used adjustable wrenches as I recall. Larger than 12" I have a 15" napa.We had to heat the prop quite a bit to break it free even using a puller the yard had. I have a spare nut in So Cal I could measure but be prepared with new nuts and check with a prop repair shop. I walked in with my prop and they knew exactly what I needed and when I picked up the prop in a few days it was good as new.

I've always used adjustable pipe wrenches for inboard prop nut removal and have had a length of pipe available to slide over the wrench for added leverage.
