Going to look at an 02 28

Post by Jkraft »

As the title says, I’m looking at an 02 28 The tomorrow. Is there anything specific to look for? I’m pretty excited but was hoping to find a thorough check list of what to examine.

Thanks

Other than the usual things when looking at a used boat purchase, if it has a Yanmar ( and I hope it does, love ours), be sure the exhaust valve seals are the latest design. Not sure the issue pertains to the ‘02 engine models but it’s possible. It was right at the transition phase of the production. Change out of the seals would run you about $1200 or so if you had to have it done.

Thank you Carol! That’s the info I was looking for. It does have the 315 with 600 hours. Do you know if I can see any of the seals from the oil fill to verify if it’s been done? I know the 2002 was plagued with it too

Basic maintenance records would be nice... 600hrs is not a lot of use given the year of the boat. The timing belt is supposed to be changed every 5 years or 1,250 hrs. Original engine? Do a google search on "Yanmar 6lp maintenance schedule" and you'll get an idea of what should have been done based on time/hours.

Yup, whatever comes first, usually the 5 Years.
My timing belt has been changed 3 times, engine has 1050 hours on it.
Ignorant owner is a no-no: I turned down 2 Albin 28TE’s after survey and sea trial because owners had not done the required maintenance and repairs.

I looked at the boat today. The valves were done and the belt and tensioner in 2015. There was a belt squeal and a couple of minor things but it ran like a champ. Looks like this will be my next boat.

Sounds great and congratulations!
Are you having a survey? Not only is it a really good idea, but it will most likely be required by your insurance company.

I’m actually skipping Survey, I know boats pretty well and have had 14 of them. I also have a survey from 2016 from the owner. I spoke with the insurance company and they said it’s not necessary. But that’s where I am with it for now.

The boat is so clean and ran so good I just can’t see it. I know it’s still a gamble but I’m feeling confident
