Peninsular(GM) opinions?

Post by allante »

Hi - maybe this subject has been beaten to death. What is the overall consensus on the Peninsular power plant in a 28TE?
Boats with them seem to be priced a little less. Is it because of reality or perception?

thanx

thank you. Seems like most people that have actually owned report positively. The negatives are more hearsay i think

Well i have not had much luck with the Peninsular, (Towed twice) especially since they sold out their parts supply to someone in Texas and as of 3 months ago they were reorganizing their system. I don't know if they are back up.
I removed mine. I'm actually going to outboards. (See my thread).
Good luck in any event.

I was seriously considering a 28TE a few years back. i followed the market for about 6 months and studied the AOG posts regarding the "Beast" Peninsular engine, My conclusion was that I would not want one. Every single 28TE that turned up on Yacht world that had had an engine replaced or needed an engine replacement was equipped with the Peninsular. The customer support from the business that sold them was excellent by all reports. Unfortunately for the owners they went out of business last year.

Just found this https://www.udmarine.com and they seem to have parts and long blocks available.

Our 1996 28TE was repowered with new engine from Peninsular in 2013. From reading on this site, it seems the main issues with the "Beast" engines, including some engine block issues, occurred in the earlier years. Our repower engine at 400 hours is doing its job. With medium load we cruise 20 kt at 2800-3000 rpm and 1.6 nmpg. Max 26 kt at 3500 rpm. I think those numbers may be a little better than some other 28TE engines due to higher displacement. I have had no problem getting maintenance parts from John at Unique Diesel. He has been knowledgeable and helpful.

I have the peninsular in the 28 that I purchased last year and had no issues. I am still trying to find out how many zinks are in/on the motor. Anyone have an idea???
Also how many zinks on the boat?? 2 on trim tabs,1 on bow thruster and one on rudder. is that all???

John has been great to deal with, simple engine to work on mine is 26 yrs old so I guess it’s broken in lol!
Not a popular engine for sure but I bet if you wait another 10 years the first series of Yanmars they put in will have their fair share of issues,,,

Larry- My Peninsular 400TA engine has 1 zinc which is a pencil zinc on the heat exchanger. John said that is the only zinc on the engine. On my 1996 28 boat, I have zincs on trim tabs, rudder, and prop shaft, and also on the swim platform supports. I see no zinc on the bow thruster, so I need to research that...

I have had very small issues with my Beast. All of which has been documented here.
Clum relay (glow plug timer. I just like saying clum relay)
Fuel pump
Replaced injectors 2x since 2005.
Fuel filters on a regular basis.
change oil
never ran out of fuel.

I would not hesitate to purchase another nor recommend the purchase to a friend.
