Perko Strainer basket.

Post by Norseman »

Can’t seem to get the correct one:
Old basket is corroding away with a small hole growing bigger.
Easy dimensions, 12” tall without the handle, 3” across.
Called Perko, they don’t sell ‘em by size.
Read of a label I found on the strainer, it made no sense to the Perko rep: As 493 and 500 are two different models.
(A UL label)
AD841DAB-F48A-4361-BDA0-C384F0A88DDC.jpeg
Old basket:
D81171B6-79BC-4181-AA95-1378BAB21A75.jpeg
Clicked around on Google, Amazon, West Marine etc, nobody can tell me the dimensions on the baskets they are selling.

(Perko said they they don’t make any 12” baskets anymore, probably a 12.5” or something will also fit if the handle is slightly shorter)

Any ideas on the basket model #?
(It says Perko, Made in the USA under-neat, no number)

Check the ordering table out. Believe you may find the correct strainer.

That was a good find and the closest basket is this one:

2 16 7-1/2 0493009PLB 6 x 12 3-5/16 x 12-1/4 13:1 19.5 0493DP999M (or) 99R

Will pull the old basket out and measure again, see if the body can take a 3-5/16 x 12-1/4” basket.
Thx

Also found this one: Only one 3” basket, but it won’t show how tall:

WOW ! That’s pretty steep! Only good news is that you’ll probably never have to replace again.

Yeah, too steep.
I asked the manufacturer if the retail prices were correct ? They recommended this company:

“Call Elisha Webb & Sons Co. in Philadelphia, PA 215-535-2628. Augie will order it for you. He should be cheaper than that.“

Called them up, $105 plus $18 shipping, I ordered from them.
All good.

New basket arrived today, perfect fit, all good, but still expensive @ $105 + $22 shipping.
Oh well, cheap insurance.

Old basket with hole, possible corrosion, not sure, but an object that size could do a number on the water pump..

Yeah, but there is a few other suspect areas on the basket, welding one hole could end up like Whack-a-Mole, you plug one, another opens up.
Learned long ago that boats are expensive to maintain, since then I just play and pay with a smile.. :D (unless the Yanmar blows up, then I won’t be smiling while cutting a check for $35,000.00. )

(How much is the old Toyota Land Cruiser turbo Diesel engine in the UK?)

Good number of 4.2 litre engines here. Seems to be the vehicle of choice by the special armed services. Must be the 100hdft engine ( I think but I do have the details in full for cam belts etc) one thing that’s a major difference between the Toyota and yanmar is the pistons. Totally different but interestingly the Nanni is the same block and all the parts come in Nanni boxes but are Toyota parts when you open the box. Also the Nanni engine is rated at 320bhp despite it being a yanmar in a blue skin and the water pump being a pain in the arse by sticking out past the crank instead of being tucked in by the engine mount. I’ve even eyed up the Nanni as a replacement for my engine some day but the water pump is the sticking point as it will hit the bulkhead by the fuel tank.
