Sea Dek on 31 TE

Post by Coho Spirit »

Has anyone used Sea Dek materials on their back deck? We are repairing the back deck and the yard is trying to talk us into using the Sea Deck materials that are from Florida.

Coho Spirt: Don't know the product. Is intended to provide a non slip surface? I notice you are from Newport, Or. Are you aware of the NW AOG? We are meeting in Port of Kingston this year. There are several others from Northern Oregon. We would like to see you there.

We are looking at putting the SeaDek product on our 28 TE. Have done a lot of research and looks like a great product. HydraSport put it on their new 53 footer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYd0WRey1P4

Did you end up using it?

Used the Sea Dec material for replacement of my coaming pads. Worked well for that application.

I would love to bring this topic back to life as I'm thinking about doing a Sea Dek type of product in the cockpit of my 28. Who has done this to their Albin?? Do you like the product? Does it hold up well to fishing? Would love to see some pic's of installs...

We had Sea Dek on the 28TE for 20 months:
Easy on bare feet as it is soft foam, comfy.
Gets dirty like a white carpet in a house, but cleans ok with a pressure washer or a scrub brush and soap/water, but it always look dirty unless you clean it weekly.
Easy to damage if you drop a tool, an engine part or slide a cooler across the deck.
We have lots of damage to the Sea Dek from our dog jumping on and off the boat to chase and kill iguanas: The claws tears it up..
Paid $2,500 and it looked good when new.
Should have gone for a hard type fake teak. Live and learn.

This Iguana was caught on the Sea Dek, then the dog jumped off the boat with the dragon in her mouth after a short battle, lots of damage to the fragile Sea Dek.

Norseman - I appreciate your feedback and somewhat disappointed to hear about the lack of durability from the product.

Well, it is probably durable if you only walk on it with bare feet and don’t
have iguanas and dogs onboard.. It is fragile for sure.

Coho Spirit,
I also looked at this product and everyone I had talked to said the same thing, not durable at all. We instead went with Flexi-teak , more expensive but I think it looks better. We have only had it 1 season but no marks or stains. We installed it in the cockpit and swim platform.

I used Plasdeck synthetic teak in the cockpit of my previous boat. Easy to install, durable and looks almost like real teak. Only issue I had with it is that it is susceptible to acetone. I documented the project on my blog:

Flexiteek for me. Loves being pressure washed and cleans up beautifully with bleach or something even as strong as janitol. Only thing like all synthetic is don’t spill used oil on it. Stains like a pig. I now always cover the deck during oil changes, but keep a box of washing powder on the boat. If I do spill it, I cover it in slightly damp washing powder and the stain soaks out 95%. A light sanding removes it fully. Takes a fair bit of abuse throughout the year. Squid ink and cuttlefish ink does make it dirty but after a wash down and some rain that soon goes away.

Makai – Thanks for your response, that product looks great! I’m going to reach out for a quote… can I ask how much this project cost you?

Tree – That looks really sharp…. Thanks for sharing!
