2001 28TE with Cummins 370b max speed

Post by jetter »

Over the years I have seen reports of a max speed of 27 to 28 knots at 3000 rpm. I have never achieved more than 23 knots at 3000 rpm. This is with a new bottom and 1/2 tanks. I cruise at 2300 rpm running 14 to 15 knots. Something that I am curious about is whether there may be a weight difference between model years. Last spring the crane operator advised me that my boat weighted 11,000 lbs at lift-in. This is with full fuel and no water (or beer). Do other 370b owners have knowledge of their "loaded" weight?

I don't have a whole lot of experience, but I have the 370 as well and at 3000rpm and 3/4 tank of fuel I can run 27 KNTS exactly.
Not sure on my hull weight though. I had 4 big dudes onboard.

Here are some GPS and Tachometer pictures with a "full" tank of fuel & full tank of water from my '02 28TE with a Cummins 6BTA 370:
2400- @ 19.2kts.jpg
2600 @ 21.6kts.jpg
3000 @ 25.8kts.jpg
Getting the tank down to 3/4 easily hit 27 knots.

Its a mystery. Because I hit 3000 rpm I am assuming I have the correct prop. Speed is off the GPS. Maybe I need to try in salt water for more buoyancy..........ha

Although I run my 28 with a Yanmar 315, I don't believe the hull weight is anywhere near 11000 plus pounds. Are you sure there are no extra happy juice kegs hiding in your bilge or additional lead weights in your keel. I am not an expert on displacement issues, but I would think that even if you had full fuel, water and no souls on board, your weight shouldn't exceed 9000 pounds.

It will be a different crane at spring lift-in. I will get a weight report from him and report.

Not knowing if/how the Cummins is governed I'd be thinking you're UNDER propped. So you're turning the RPM's but the prop isn't giving you the proper push.

Splashed today. Second crane operator confirm weight at 11,000 lbs. This is with 1/4 fuel and no water. I know the Cummins is heavier than the Yanmar, but seems a bit much. Mystery continues.

I have a 1996 TE with a 370 Cummins. 19x23 4 blade prop. I hit 3000 RPM exactly and run 27.5 KNTS with a normal load.
Put a photo tack on the engine to confirm RPM.

This seems a little on the slow end of things with that power. Our boat is a 2003 with a Yanmar 315. We see 19 knots cruise at 3300rpm, and ~25 (24.5ish) knots wide open.

What are the max rpms on a Cummins and the weight? Last week I took Serenity out a perfectly calm day, slack tide, 3/4 tank. 15 gallons of water and my 245 pound Greek well tuned body I hit the following back and forth:
3000 RPM.....18 knts
3200 RPM.....19.4 knts.
3400 RPM.....21.6 knts.
3785 RPM.....24.6 knts

Above measured by 2 GPS and a 2008 315 Yanmar with less than 500 hours. Once I go through my winterized fuel, I expect to have higher numbers.
The Cummins is running quite fast.

The max RPM for 370b is 3000 rpm. (there is suggestion from experts that it should be propped for 3100 rpm) My weight is 11,000 lbs, I am aware that salt vs fresh water can made up to 10% difference in hull speed and may require different props.

My 96 with 2 people on board and half fuel in the main tank hits just shy of 28 knots at 3050rpm. Is 11,000 lbs correct? That seems really high. How much stuff are you keeping on board? I try to keep the boat as light ship as possible.

Two lifts with different cranes confirmed weight. Most gear removed. No water. Half fuel. I will photo tech to check rpms. I'm not sure what core the hull has as it was laid in May 2000 which is around the time Albin changed from balsa.
