Windshield Glass replacement

Post by brookesmith »

Has anyone ever replaced the windshield glass on a 36? Also replacement of the door glass? I've changed a few windows ok. But not sure how to disassemble the windshield framing.

Good morning. I re did my operable center front window by carefully working the old wood molding with E acto knife and putty knives. I sanded the frame and frame pieces and put clear finish on everything. First epoxy, then Epifane varnish. I am not a really good putty guy, so I had professioal glazier cut new glass and place it in caulk. To keep look of teak moldings, but make a watertite seal, I depended on wood sealed by epoxy and caulk job. moulding is for looks only. I re did the sliding doors the same way. A good winter job. I am now using Interlux perfection plus two part finish. 10 year deal but you need a pro fume mask to use safely!

Did you take the molding off the outside or the inside of the window and doors?

On my boat one side was visably a removable moulding, and one side was fixed joinery. good luck. Bye the by I took my doors off to work and my front window. Easier to work horizontal then vertickle on de boat. Jay

I guess it makes sense that the removable side would be on the outside and the fixed portion is on the inside as giant waves crash into the windshield to keep it from just popping inward. Same for the rogue waves hitting the outside of the doors. I really need to refinish the doors anyway. The glass on much of the boat was SANDED on the edges by a previous owner. Very irritating. But also the old glass seems to be delaminating on the edges. So it is a beautification project not something critical. I've changed may of the sliding windows without breaking the wood frame by using lots of wooded shims tapped at many points to carefully and gently pry the frame from the fiberglass.
