Albin Palm Beach 37, Prop Selection

Post by HPH »

Wondering if anyone can give me some info on prop size and pitch they are using on an albin Palm Beach 37? Also, their maximum speed and usual cruise speed and RPM?

I have 1988 albin 37 and normally cruise at 8-9 knots at about 1750 RPM. Rarely go over 1850 RPM. I suspect I am over propped as top out at approx. 2600 RPM. Engines, twin 6BT5.9M

I propose to recheck my tachometers for calibration and do a RPM vs speed run before I lay up for the winter. Will adjust props as required.

Just curious as to what others may be using for props?

Only advice I can give is first of all check your tach for accuracy.
Once verified/adjusted, WOT under load must be 2600 minimum. Better if its 2700 as the 6BT likes to breathe easy.
If you need to adjust the prop, your local shop should be able to advise a change.

Thanks for the reply.
Have checked tach for accuracy.
Appears I am approx. 150 RPM shy of ideal target.
I know the Palm Beach model is not too common but was hoping that an owner could tell me what they are using for props.

Not sure what size prop you are running now but I have a 25x23 (4 Blade)in very good condition for sale if you need one of this size. I too was over propped on 35TE with Yanmar 6LY2A-STP. Down to 24x17 to get to 3350RPM now.

David,
Thanks for offer. I have a pair of 23" x 23" on the boat. Slightly over propped. Sending them to be out over the winter to be re-pitched.
Was hoping that someone with a Palm Beach 37 with Cummins 210s could tell me what props they are using.
Regards,
Paul

Wow! I have the TMD40's at 165hp and only have 18" 15"pitch. I just got the boat last year and only just now have had the props worked so I can not offer any advise as of yet. but that 25" is big prop, especially at 4 blade. I sold a 39 sea ray when I got this boat, i was pushing 300hp per engine and only had 22" 4 blade at 21" pitch
