electrical outlet box at the helm

Post by gmberkley »

has anyone purchased a new electrical box that is next to the helm, it has a tab on the top and bottom that secures it to the fiberglass, it's not a typical electric outlet box and I need to replace mine, any advise would be appreciated, thanks.

Do you have a pic? Do you want to replace the whole electrical box or just the cover?

I like to replace the box, its 3 1/8" long x 2 3/8" wide, depth doesn't matter, it has two metal tabs, one on the bottom, one on top with screw holes so it can attach to the fiberglass side. a regular plastic electric box is too big, and doesn't have the provision for attaching to the "wall", as you know a box for a house attaches to the wood stud, we don't have that option, hence the two tabs, I was able to buy an new waterproof cover, but can't find the box, the screw that holds the top of the box onto the boat broke off in the box, and I can't get it out, and the metal is rusting anyway, so I'd like to replace it.

If this is the outlet that you are looking at, I bought the cover at Lowes and it mounted just like what was already there. It is an external use cover with a gasket.
