I would greatly appreciate, if anyone has "plans and proposals" for a peninsular to Cummins 5.9 or a Yanmar 6LP repower. First question is - do the existing mounts readily adjust to accept the two above engines?
I would be very grateful and have a special present to the person who gives me the best drawings.
Can the 19" 23 4 prop and the existing shaft be used?
I am leaning more to a Cummins

Rob from Superior Specialized Services is a marine diesel mechanic for both Yanmar & Cummins and I know he has done several repowers of the Penn in 28TE's, he just did one the end of last season from a Penn to a Yanmar 6LP. Of course, the tranny will have to be changed as the ratio must accomodate the engine rpm, 2:1 tranny for a 6LP, 1.4:1 for a Cummins. Your prop will likely work with the Cummins but I have not seen a 6LP with a 3 bladed wheel.

When you say mouts do you mean the aluminum angled plates bolted to the stringers or the adjustable motor mounts that sits on them?

They would accept different mounts but not sure if they would require re-posititioning.

I just put a deposit on a new Yanmar 315. I'm confident I will be happy- I was never comfortable going on a long trip with my Peninsular- got a 1000 hours out of it.
When the new engine is installed- keys here I come.

Do they have to do anything special with the exhaust ? I think its on the opposite side.
If you have the opportunity to take pics along the way, Im sure many would be interested...

I am hoping for a simply no problem install. The exhaust is on the port side (passenger side) for the peninsular.
Has the valve issue been resolved on the 315 yanmar?

Don:

A "no problem install" is a nice concept but on boats, just about anything is possible, very little is "no problem". Are you familiar with "www.boatdiesel.com"? It's a great resource for all things about diesel engines and worth the very reasonable membership fee. I can pretty much guarantee there will be someone there that's done the same switch and will have advice for you.

All of the Peninsular's I had looked at (4 or 5) have starboard exhaust. And yes, the Yanmar "valve issue" was corrected years ago (by Feb 2002).
