Toyed with the idea of getting one myself. Looking forward to opinions. I made the grave mistake of reading graphic passages from a sea survival story out loud to my wife. A family lived 37 days on a life raft and dingy. Next day I bought an eprib for the boat at her not so subtle urging.

First I would not use it to replace a true 406 EPIRB.
But as a way of communicating its interesting but reminds me of the first GPS units, very limited and void of features.
After reading about it, I find there are features I want in such a unit.
1) I want it to be a GPS (with display)
2) I wish to enter my messages (ie...text 256 characters, ect)+Lat,Long
3) I wish to send msgs to addresses of my choice (emails, sms, ect)
4) Of course now wish to receive text messages on it.
5) Heck it might as well have a USB interface to connect to laptop for slow speed connections....

I know I'm a bit overboard but imagine what will be out in a few years....connectivity even in the ocean.....of course it will cost more than $100/year
