Noise Reduction

Post by BruceW »

I'd like some advice, please, on the subject of reducing noise- mainly engine noise- aboard my boat.

About a year ago I bought a '95 28TE which has a Cummins 250hp engine. Since then we've been enjoying the boat, doing some upfits and some TLC projects. I'd like to start now on noise reduction. The original insulating material seems to be long gone and some newer foil-faced fiberglass has been added in the engine box. That material's not in very good shape. I'm ready to put new material in, starting with the engine box and gradually continuing until the point where the return isn't worth the trouble and cost.

I'm aware of two materials, Dynamat, which I've used in old car restoration, and Soundown, which I've never used, but which seems popular in boats and RV's. I've done a search of these forums, but am wondering if there's any more recent experience which anyone can offer- about the materials, other options, techniques, whatever. I'd appreciate any help.

I’ve used sound down on other boats with excellent results. The stuff works.

Soundown tech support is very helpful with installation techniques and all kinds of advice.

One thing I found that made a significant reduction in sound was installing a false bulkhead between the engine and batteries.

Tree, Hadn't thought about that. That's a good idea. Thanks.
