Engine temp

Post by jpwrist »

Hi,

I have a 2001 28 TE with a Yanmar 6LP STE 800 hours, located in Galveston, TX. The engine seems to run at around 170 degrees F both down here and in the San Juan Islands (last two years). Two questions: 1) is this in the correct temp. range? 2) how accurate are the temp gauges on the console?

Thanks for any comments.

Hi Jos,

DISCLAIMER - I don't have a Yanmar! :) But...Sounds a little on the cool side to me. Does she heat up more when running? You can get one of those IR thermometers and aim it at the sender right where it screws in to see if it's an engine or an instrument issue. I'd be expecting something more in the 185+ range, hotter when at WOT. Your thermostat may be leaking on otherwise defective if the sender proves to be ok.

I have the 6LP (600 hours) with Beede thermometer, running in relatively cool Cape Cod and Islands water.
175 degrees F. cruise, and perhaps a bit more approaching 180 F. when pushed.
Always been that way.

Doug and Bob,

Thanks for your replies. I'll get one of those IR thermometers.

After a good Ridlyme flush twin 315 yanmars were running 170-175 consistantly around 3000 3200 RPMs Before cleanout I was at 180 but when diesels ran 3500/3600 (which I do not normally run at) heated up to the 185 plus ranges,, On occasion I do like to clean out the turbos of carbon and assure that I am turning props to 3800 for correctness

I just had my heat exchanger pulled and boiled out at a radiator repair shop. I have much better water flow now...
