Chesapeake Bay Trophy Season - Skunked.

Post by BRISWISH »

Third season with my Albin. Usually launch occurs in mid-June due to scheduling issues with engine maintenance, bottom paint, and other spring duties. This year, I was adamant to get out on the water for striper/rockfish trophy season on the Chesapeake May 1st through May 15th and planned everything early. Launched during the week last week. I haven't fished trophy season since my teens. Bought all the proper rods, bait caster reels, lines, and rigs for trolling for the sought-out 35+ inch striper/rockfish....

Trolled ALL DAY Saturday at Love Point (southern tip of Kent Island). Plenty of boats and charters out and not a single bite. I didn't see anyone catching. Went out again on Sunday from my home port, this time south of the bay bridge to troll the southern end of Kent Island. Nothing. Not a single bite. Didn't see that mainy boats out. The Chesapeake Bay Rockfishing Reports Facebook group has been really quiet as well. The massive ones have already migrated. Still thought I'd at least catch a smaller one for catch and release.

It was still two great days on the water. Beautiful weather, good friends... beat sitting at home. I'm sad the trophy season in the upper Chesapeake isn't what it used to be though. I remember in my teens we would CRUSH IT.

Anywho, the size limit will drop after May 15th and as the water gets warmer I'll begin jigging, then chunking, then live lining. Rockfish will be caught this season and I will post! I just need to be patient.

Still took a good pic heading to Love Point on Saturday.

Great photo & beautiful weather. Bummer on the fish though.
