Hyacinth declared no longer a "project Boat"

Post by SalishAire »

On July 31 2021 we got our first look at Hyacinth in a barn in Michigan. We pulled her back across the country (with some emergency repairs on trailer brakes and lights) using her as a camping trailer until we got her to her new home near Olympia, Washington. Almost 11 months later we have determined she is no longer a "project boat" but rather a "boat getting regular maintenance and upgrades".
Trying to list at least the major projects:
  • Fiberglass over original canvas cover style cabin top so it is ready for the Pacific Northwest (PNW)
Replace Corian (branded) floorboards with 3/4 marine plywood
Install items that came with the boat but never installed including: a) cabin heater (engine heat), b) Lowrance Radar and chartplotter, c) hot water tank, d) Auto pilot
Replace items that didn't fit our boating style including: a) Installed composting head, b) Installed Wallas heater/stove, c) reconfigured battery box and installed 120 V inverter, d) Replace vinyl snap in window on pilot house with acrylic windows, e) Replaced Lowrance VHF radio (couldn't reprogram the MMSI locally) with ICOAM VHF and new antenna, f) Replaced very worn aft cabin Dutch doors and refinished front cabin door
Added new Garmin chartplotter (coordinates data with Lowrance unit via NMEA 2000 but MUCH faster CPU for chart work)
Added ICOM IC-7100 ham radio and antennas for it
Revived my father's 70 year old wood lathe to turn new teak dowels for cleats and steps
Refinished all teak handrails and added a couple stainless ones to make boarding easier
Fiberglassed to fill-in above waterline no longer used through-hull holes (not confident enough to do the below waterline ones yet so the fittings are plugged)
Welded stainless arches (aft arch to support cockpit canvas, ham antennas and dinghy or kayaks; forward arch to support dinghy or kayaks and radar AND to lift cabin top back to its original arch radius)
Sewed "canvas" (Stamoid brand fabric) and windows for cockpit cover
Painted everything above the rub rail

Very nice! WillieC is talking about doing Princess Louisa Inlet & Chatterbox Falls this summer now that his Starfleet Commander is fully retired. Maybe you could join them? That would be great for photo shoots of each boat. They'll be going by water all the way from Hood Canal.

Now if/when you add a dinghy you could name it Daisy and name a kayak Rose or vice versa after other characters in "Keeping Up Appearances" (Bucket pronounced as Bouquet").
