Leaky fresh water tank cap

I could find mention of other folks having problems with the big red cap on the fresh water tank of an A25 leaking but I couldn't find if anyone had come up with a solution. So far I have made an O ring for it (I believe that there wasn't one at all when we bought the boat.)

Mine also leaked and it was no wonder, the upper flange on the tank looked like it had been cut with a drywall knife, I trimmed the flange flat and inserted an O ring and that fixed the leaking.

Mine came with no O-ring and, of course, leaked.

I had a fair bit of difficulty keeping it leak free even with an O-ring until it dawned on me to lubricate both the O-ring and the threads. The best lubricant I've found by far is the wax used to seal a toilet to the floor. New stuff, mind you!!!

Completely insoluble in water and seems to stay in place forever.
