New owner of a 1970 Albin 25

Hey guys! I am a new owner of PlanB. She needs lots of work! A diesel engine is new for me. This one appears to Have a volvo MD2 with 800 hrs since last rebuild. First order of buisiness will be cleaning deciphering and logging systems. The main bulkhead needs replaced then re-wired. Otherwise cosmetics and woodwork. Plan is to do short cruises over the next few years to prep for the loop.
Any an all advice, comments and even insults will be appreciated! Haha.
Previous boats: com-pac 19, Montego 25, Rhodes 22, treworgy 42, Beneteau 52, Bass Buggy pontoon, Chrysler 18 runabout, sunfish, Adventure 16 canoe, and Water tender 9.8 (probably most fun of all)!

Hey Bob, welcome aboard!

A 1970 model may well be one of the oldest ones of any on this forum. 1970 was pre-standardized HIN hull numbers and likely had a new one generated & assigned at some point in its life. The original Albin hull number should be on cast brass or bronze name plate attached to the dash below the steering wheel. The wood work may be rough, but A25's are noted for their quality fiberglass work, including foam deck coring & resistance to delamination & osmotic blisters. If the engine is original it would be a 2 cylinder Albin designed AD21. Volvos were OEM in later years, 1972 & newer. We have a few members with AD 21 engines & experience with them. Post a picture if you can (click "Full Editor & Preview" button, then "Attachments", and "Add Files" and you can upload jpgs up to 4MB size). We'll be anxious to hear stories of your restoration progress & eventual cruising on the Loop.

Your MD2 may very well be original to the boat. There are a number of Albins here in British Columbia that came from the factory with that engine. Albin produced their own AD21 diesel but they could not produce them in sufficient quantity to meet demand so they also used Volvo engines too.

Sounds like you have a project ahead getting the boat to your liking. FYI, the plywood veneer is Sapele if you are looking for replacement panels. It only requires varnish to match the original finish.

These are great boats and truly fuel efficient. Expect to get about 6 knots and 1.5 L/hr at 1600 RPM.

Hey! Thanks for answering. It seems the Engine is a volvo MD11D.
The Albin 25 Hull number plate says: Ser. 2. no. 274

MD11D, 2 cylinder. Interesting. About the same as the AD21 as far as HP. I was unaware of any VP engines until 1973 when they went to the MD3B. The second "D" indicates a more continuous duty rating than the "C" engines, but a lot of the same parts. Is the transmission water cooled? Fresh or raw-water cooled engine? (Look for an external heat exchanger.)

Volvo Penta took over the Albin engine, maybe they slipped a few 2 cylinder VP engines in there back in the day.
