Small lifting device?

Our 37lb dry-weight (50lbs wet) dog has demonstrated that she is not averse to throwing herself off boats and docks. This is sort of OK when alongside and I'm able to swim her to an appropriate lift-out/walkout point, but I am concerned about it happening underway (however unlikely). She always wears a PFD, but the issue is safely lifting her back on board when I'm out on my own-some, (yes, I recognize that at my age this is probly stoopid). The A27 has no transom door, and a good 30" freeboard, so "lean out and lift" is a poor option.

I figure that mounting an outboard crane or lobster pot lifter with a triple hoist would do the dog-lift trick quite well, hooked onto her PFD handle for the short lift inboard. (Do I detect guffaws or "that'll take some training" mutterings?)

Any comments or other ideas? Does anyone have a hoist they don't need?

Following this. I like the idea of a simple hoist, even on an A25. Something easily demounted and stowed, somewhere.

Howdy Doug, I've seen small collapsible cranes for outboards that would work well. They can fit on various mounting locations like transom, swim platform, etc. Personally, I'd opt for the swim platform version so I could assist easier. It'd be pretty easy to build one yourself too. Ben

Wow! Thanks Willie and Ben; that's exactly what I had in mind, and l like Hira's answers to the upper and lower fittings to the wheelhouse and deck. All I need to do now is find a suitable hoist, and that's well in hand.

UPDATE: Looks as if Bacon Sails in Annapolis has a few small used hoists that might work. YAY!

I have built several custom outboard motor lifts for various boats, including my A28. They are simple and inexpensive to build, infinitely customizable and can be stowed when not in use. Here are the details for the outboard motor hoist. I meant to post them earlier but got distracted. This hoist is designed for a 6hp outboard.

Thanks Ben, that's a very neat looking hoist and installation.

I just returned from Bacon Sails in Annapolis (a sort of Marine consignment store and sailmaker) with a Forespar Motor Mate Hoist in brand-new, un-used condition, which retails at ca. $700.00 but was picked up for $370.00 including all the hardware and tackle needed for installation. It's rated at 100lbs, and therefore should handle a wet Boykin Spaniel with ease, as well as ensure my old bones can lift and shift batteries, a 2.5 hp outboard and other heavy bits with no problem. Might even ease the loading of my Jackson STAXX yak as well.

I'll post pix as soon as I get it installed. Plan to rig it to go port or stbd as needed.

I like the Forespar unit, and that's a great deal you got from Bacon! I looked long and hard at that unit, but decided to build my own because I wanted one that was easy fold and store in the rod racks built into the cockpit sides, plus I wanted it to have a longer reach (30") so it would be easy to get the outboard motor directly over the transom of my dinghy as well as the bracket where I store the motor. I also wanted it to be easy and safe for my wife to set up and operate, thus the 4-part purchase, ratchet block, and cam cleat.

Just looked at the fixtures and I'm thinking to put one on the port side of the wheelhouse and a second on the stbd side, to cover all contingencies. The actual hoist is stowable so two locations will be practical.
