Modifications, repairs and improvements, 28TE

Post by Norseman »

Hi from Fort Lauderdale.
We purchased this 2001 cream puff 28TE fall 2017:
Great boat but I did not like the separate shifter and throttle.
Instead I converted to a single lever, but same brand: Seastar Solutions, or Morse, MT-3.a few days ago.
Had to put some elbow grease into it and change the innards of the control around, the default was opposite of what was needed.
Also made a new spacer, teak with 5 coats of varnish.
Love it.

Changed name to Odin.

The entire boat was wet-sanded, compounded and waxed/polished.
Had the best guy in Fort Lauderdale do the job.
9 Days and 73 hours, great job.

33 lbs Rocna anchor on the bow and aluminum poles in the back for the Bimini top. (Should be done next week, the canvas girl took off Thanksgiving weekend)

Very nice. Mind if I ask how much the wet sanding cost?

Don’t mind at all.
I paid him $2k for the 73 hrs, materials included.
He billed me $1,600 but I paid $400 more as he worked hard and did an outstanding job, sometimes working until 11PM with lights rigged and platforms and floats in use.

They're called bolsters, and they're custom. Check with your canvas person as a first step.

Ouch, I was hoping bolsters could be bought rather than custom made. Oh well, canvas shop next.

Added a 33 lbs Rocna recently, also 100’ of 1/4” HT chain. Had to have a new roller bail made to accommodate the bigger anchor.
Previous owner added the shiny windlass 3 years ago.

One of the first projects on this 28TE was the wipers and wiper arms.
Did a previous posting on the project, but to get it all in one thread, I will repeat it here:
Original wiper and arms. Everything still worked, but the springs had lost their oomph and corrosion was evident.
Used a hacksaw to cut the arms off the shafts, then reinstalled new arms using Tef-Gel. All 3 arms and wipers were available at West Marine, same stuff as the factory mounted 16 years ago.

Air intakes:
I find it fascinating that these engine/bilge Air inlets are pointing forward, as in towards the bow.
It seems a recipe for scooping saltwater into the boat, rather than keeping water out.
Are these mounted the wrong way from the factory....?
