Question about the prop shaft specs on an Albin28 TE

Post by scaporali »

Hi everyone from Puerto Rico, I recently purchased a 1996 Albin 28TE, and I believe the prop shaft has been abused by a past owner and has a slight bent causing vibration to the boat structure. I am looking for the specs of the shaft in order to buy a new one or to modify a larger shaft from another boat. If anybody can help with some pointers, maybe where to buy, I would appreciate.

Thanks,

Sergio

Hi and welcome aboard.
Which engine and which transmission do you have?

(These boats came with several different engines and transmissions, some of the engines were installed backwards, like in my 2001 Engine box. I believe the shaft is 1.5” diameter, not sure about the length, guessing 6-7 feet.)

What is your indications the prop shaft has been abused by previous owner?
(Vibrations and/or dented and bent prop?)

If so, why did you buy the boat? No survey ? 😳

Would be happy to help, but more information would be useful.

Hi Norseman,

Thank you for responding. The engine is a Cummins 6BTA and the engine is installed backwards. I don´t have with me information on the transmission though.
I bought the boat while it was in repair. It had sustained damaged in the prop and shaft. When I bought it, the shaft had been repaired by a known machine shop in Puerto Rico, the prop had to be sent to repair.
We changed the stuffing box and noticed that the shaft is not perfectly straight, so I want to change it.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you,

Sergio

Your original shaft with the 6BTA was a 1.5" Aquamet 22 Stainless Steel Shaft fabricated and provided by and through H&H Propellar Shop in Salem, Massachusetts, USA .. they are still there and providing shfting for clents worldwide. They have all of the specs and can ship one to you.
