Stainless steel trimmed nylon thru hull fittings

Post by btully80 »

Wondering if anyone knows if the factory standardized on the stainless steel trimmed nylon thru hull fittings used on the 2003 28TEs? I had to re-bed one of the 3/4” thru hulls due to a leak and damaged it on the way out. It’s in a cluster of other thru hulls and I’d like match as close as possible. Thanks!

If the same as on my 2001 28TE, 5 of the 6 Starboard, above water line thru hulls were Groco SS, the 3/4” model number is Groco # HTH-750-S.
Bought 3 of them 2 days ago for $21 at B.O.W., also saw them on Amazon for $66..

The forward fitting for the shower sump was white nylon, ripped it out and installed a SS instead.

Correction to the above, the picture shows 6 fittings, 3 of them at 3/4”, two are 1” and the aft one even bigger, not sure what size as I did not replace it, only removed and re-bedded.

Nylon thru hull fittings that old should not be trusted. Replacement is in order. New nylon ok SS is better.

I'm with you guys. I actually went out and bought new Groco stainless fittings to replace them all. As it turns out the cut out diameter for the groco fitting is about 1/4" - 3/8" smaller than the nylon ones. Seems like that is too big of a gap to fill with 4200. One of the other nylon fittings is 1 1/2" (for the manual bilge pump) and the groco equivalent has a bigger cut out requiring additional hole saw drilling without the convenience of a pilot hole :? . Feels like more work than it's worth. Did you guys run into the same issues when changing yours out?

Looks like you bought the Groco bronze fittings.?
They are just as good, or better and should be the same 3/4” or 1” whatever.
If you see a tight fit, perhaps old 3M 5200 in the way?
Is your boat in the drink, or on the hard?
(I replaced my fittings in the drink, pain in the rear, lay down at high tide, on the belly, trying clean and bed for a few hours before the tide goes down, then try again tomorrow.)
If your boat is on the hard, easy and peasy, take your time and tinker with it.
Here is a picture of my openings after the fittings were removed.
Needless to say, the new pieces had to be forced in to fit, ever after I cleaned out the 101 or the 5200.

The boat is on the hard. Up here in New England our Spring launch isn't until May. Very jealous of you southern guys this time of year.

The new fittings are all SS and are getting packed up to be returned. BTW, I got them from defender. They seemed to have pretty competitive prices for these items.

I did some research and it looks like these fittings have the same cutouts as the old ones: https://www.westmarine.com/buy/seafit-- ... cordNum=22

I hate to pay the West Marine tax but you can't beat the convenience of returning to your local store if they don't work.

Thanks for the feedback!

Why do you return the SS fittings?

I bought the groco ss thru hulls and found the holes needed to be enlarged for most of them. Bedded all with 4200.

I might have. Here are the Groco part numbers and sizes. None fit the existing cut-outs for the nylon fittings. My bad for not double checking the NPS measurement before ordering.
- HTH-625-S: NPS 3/4" Hose ID 5/8"
- HTH-750-S: NPS 3/4" Hose ID 3/4"
- HTH-1125-S: NPS 1-1/8" Hose ID 1-1/8"
- HTH-1500-S: NPS 1-1/2" Hose ID 1-1/2"

Not the wrong size Norseman. Hose sizes were right on. Just holes thru hull needed a little clean up.
