Battery Location (28 Engine Box)

Post by Jkraft »

Hey all, currently, my batteries are sitting on the shelf against the cabin bulkhead below the helm chairs. They are a set of 4 D AGM's and take up the entire battery shelf area. One is my house and one is my start. I am contemplating making both of them my house batteries and adding a group 31 or a group 27 as my dedicated start battery. If I do this, where would be the best place to add the start bat? The area to the starboard in that area is consumed with the vacuflush, water heater, and belt driven bilge pumps. Where do you suggest I add the third battery? I have some open space in front of both of the fish boxes under the deck

You're on the right track.
Consider building a battery shelf on the forward side of either the port or starboard deck hatch next to your engine box. That is how my 28TE was setup for the start battery. The shelf was tabbed to the engine stringer and then tabbed outboard directly to the hull / port side.

Stay tuned.

Here is a picture:
The start battery is a JC-27M-1000, seems to be plenty strong for my Yanmar.

Just on top of the blue lid over the 2 house batteries you can see the 2500 watt Xantrex inverter.
Picture is taken from aft and looking forward.

Thanks for the pic! Believe it or not my shelf is not as deep as yours.

Mine are all located in the cabin - one under the entryway and the other two forward of the water tanks under quarter berth (Group 24s). I would prefer they were in the engine room.

So many battery locations! Ours are on a shelf below the helm. All Group 27.
There's a fourth battery - for the windlass - in the compartment under the port side of the dinette.
