hydraulic steering

Post by svpp10 »

Hydraulic steering is something I never gave any thought to on an Albin 27 until this weekend when I looked at one for sale. The owner said he had changed from the standard cable steering to hydraulic steering. Is that a common modification and did the builder offer it in later models, this boat was an '85?
Thanks for any input and have a good day.

My last boat was a 1990 Albin 27 Express which I purchased used. It had hydraulic steering and i brlieve it was original equipment.

My 83 has cable steering (Teleflex) and except for replacing a worn "ball joint" type mount at the rudder end, she steers as easily as juice steering. Although more complex, should you decide to install autopilot you will be able to.

I did a self install of hyraulic steering in my 1986 A27AC. No regrets. No more wandering to port. Fingertip turning. Niiice!

My 1993 27FC has Sea Star- works seamlessly but I sea-trialed a few with cable that worked well.
