Yanmar 6LP Intake foam filter next to Turo wet with oil

Post by Royalllc »

2004 Albin flush deck with Yanmar 315 6LP. I am trying to figure out why my foam intake filter and the filter holder (metal part) is getting wet with oil. I see some white smoke when I start the engine until it gets warm. I also noticed minor engine oil consumption. I have talked to many diesel mechanics and they all said it is pretty much normal to have some oil during start and Idle. ??? Is it normal for the engine to shake during idle? As I put the it in gear, I can feel the vibration until I move up the throttle above idle speed. Is this normal?

For the oil on your air filter, that is crankcase blow-by. Some amount of blow-by is normal. On the 6lp, the crankcase breather hose is mounted just above the filter so the gasses are sucked into the intake (see pic). If you have excessive oil on the filter, it could indicate other problems.

This offseason, I'm contemplating installing a Parker/Racor Closed Crankcase Ventilation system (CCV) to remove the oil residue before it gets to the air intake. Very detailed article linked below, albeit more focused towards Cummins.

Minor oil on the air filter is normal, like a wet spot on the top of the filter.
Never seen Major oil, like the whole filter being soaked and dripping.
I rotate the filter every so often, no problem.
